ESPON territorial research conference |

New research avenues for territorial development and cohesion in Europe

Date: June 04, 2025

Venue: Online

The ESPON territorial research conference aims to investigate new research avenues for territorial development and cohesion in Europe resulting from the current global developments.

The first session will explore the challenges of political distrust, the critical role of evidence-based governance in combating regional and territorial inequalities, and strategies to bolster public trust in science. A panel will discuss the growing political discontent and public distrust in scientific expertise and exploring ways to reinforce the link between territorial research and policymaking.

Then three sessions will follow where researchers present and discuss new ideas, evidence and research avenues that have not yet been addressed within the ESPON 2030 Programme and that could support policymakers at all levels across Europe with science-based evidence on territorial development and cohesion. The researchers have been selected via a call for abstracts and will present their ideas in relation to 1) leveraging AI and computational algorithms, 2) drivers for more competitive and cohesive territories and 3) new approaches for mapping territorial disparities.

A more detailed programme, including the speakers, can be found below.

The setting

The conference will take place in a film studio in Brussels. The audience will be online with the possibility to interact with the speakers. The conference will be streamed, recorded and afterwards published on the ESPON website and YouTube.
